The security environment in East Asia and the Indo-Pacific has become increasingly tense. As the geopolitical landscapes of Europe and Asia grow more interconnected, with NATO reaching out to East Asian democracies amid ongoing geopolitical and territorial frictions, Japan has found itself caught in the middle of a great power rivalry. Threatened by Chinese military assertiveness, Japan is set to double its defense budget over the next few years, becoming the world’s third largest spender in the sector. On the other hand, with the war in Ukraine highlighting the vulnerability of the current geopolitical status quo and China pursuing a role of global powerbroker, the EU and the US are actively looking to reassert a stable rule-based order in the Indo-Pacific area.
Can Japan overcome these challenges while attempting to achieve its long-awaited defense revamp? Is Western de-risking from China ensuring better resilience against autocratic threats? What will be the benefits and the costs of realizing the Asia-Europe security linkage?

The conference is organized in the framework of the 5th edition of the “Asia and Europe Initiative” and will be held in presence in Milan at Palazzo Clerici (via Clerici 5) on Thursday 28 September from 17:00 to 19:00.
