Likt så mycket annat i dagens Ryssland börjar allt med Tjetjenien. Som Ola Wong (Kvartal 6/4) beskriver är det idag få som tvivlar på att de bomber som sprängdes i ryska hyreshus sommaren 1999, och skylldes på tjetjener, i själva verket iscensatts av säkerhetstjänsten FSB för att bereda väg för Vladimir Putins spikraka väg till presidentämbetet. Den som har tid och ork kan skärskåda den amerikanske historikern John Dunlops noggranna studie i ämnet, baserad helt på öppna källor.1Dunlop visar dessutom hur Rysslands fiende no. 1, den ökände tjetjenske islamisten Sjamil Basajev, i juli 1999 träffade chefen för den ryska presidentadministrationen i en villa på den franska rivieran tillhörande den beryktade vapensmugglaren Adnan Khashoggi.
