February 27, 2023: Niklas Swanström, ISDP’s Executive Director, was interviewed by SVT on North Korea and social media.
Over the past year, more and more North Korean accounts have started to appear on social media. Videos of ice cream tests, water park visits and exercise routines appear to be part of the country’s new propaganda strategy.
“Previously, the focus has been on military strength and the ability to fight back – now the focus is on a positive image of North Korea,” said Niklas Swanström.
“Kim Jong Un and his sister are working in a more modern way on propaganda issues. This is one of many parts of that strategy.”
“I think we will see more and more of this kind of propaganda.”
