Transatlantic Perspectives: Environmental Cooperation? US, China and Europe
Hopes have been high in Europe following President Biden’s election in November that the United States will swiftly rejoin the Paris agreement and that international cooperation on climate change will be a key priority for transatlantic relations. However, the current clashes between both Washington and Beijing and the E.U. and Beijing have raised concerns about how far international cooperation can work to overcome these rifts and whether multilaterally tackling climate change could bridge these growing divides. This Transatlantic Perspectives webinar seeks to shed light on this very question, zooming in on the role of the Transatlantic partnership as both sides weigh their options of engaging with China on the global impact of climate change.
ISDP is delighted to welcome three distinguished speakers to this webinar; Dr. Kelly Sims Gallagher, Dr. Matthew Gidden, and Dr. Janka Oertel.
Dr. Kelly Sims Gallagher is Academic Dean and Professor of Energy and Environmental Policy at The Fletcher School, Tufts University. She directs the Climate Policy Lab and the Center for International Environment and Resource Policy at Fletcher. She also served in the second term of the Obama Administration as a Senior Policy Advisor in the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and as Senior China Advisor in the Special Envoy for Climate Change office at the U.S. State Department.
Dr. Matthew Gidden joined Climate Analytics as Team Leader for Mitigation Pathway Analysis in 2019. There, he focuses on studying sustainable pathways for meeting societal demand for energy while mitigating changes to the climate and environment. Dr. Gidden developed strong expertise in energy and climate change modeling during his tenure as a Research Scholar in the Energy Program at the International Institute of Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA).
Dr. Janka Oertel is the Director of the Asia Programme at the European Council on Foreign Relations. She previously worked as a Senior Fellow in the Asia Program at the German Marshall Fund of the United States’ Berlin office, where she focused on transatlantic China policy including emerging technologies, Chinese foreign policy, and security in East Asia.
Dr. Niklas Swanström, ISDP’s Executive Director, will moderate the event.
