Japanese Foreign and Security Policies: Trends, Issues and Problems
ASIA FORUM with Professor Axel Berkofsky
Gianni Mazzocchi Fellow, University of Pavia, Italy
Wednesday, June 9, 2010, 10:00-11:30
The presentation will analyse the current trends, issues and problems on Japan’s regional and global foreign and security policy agenda: ‘What is Japan doing with whom’ in the region and beyond in terms of foreign and security policies and which issues will in the months ahead define Tokyo’s foreign policy agenda.
In this context, the presentation will e.g. cover Japan’s defense and security relations with the United States (in light of the current controversy centered around the US-Japan base re-location agreement), analyse Japan’s relations with and policy approaches towards North Korea and China (with a focus on policies towards North Korea) as well as Tokyo’s allegedly ‘new’ multilateral Asian foreign policies pronounced and (at least on paper) promoted by Japan’s (relatively) new Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama.
Dr. Axel Berkofsky is Gianni Mazzocchi Fellow and Professor at the University of Pavia, Italy, and Senior Associate Research Fellow, Istituto per gli Studi di Politica Internazionale (ISPI) Milan, Italy. He is a prolific writer on Japanese domestic and international politics and his articles have appeared in leading newspapers and journals.
